The Road Safety Team has been awarded a Prince Michael award and also a Commendation for two of their schemes.
Prince Michael International Road Safety Awards and Commendations are presented throughout the year to individuals, companies or organisations in recognition of their outstanding contribution to improving road safety.
The Road Safety Foundation nominated the A4128 in High Wycombe for a Prince Michael Award because it has been recognised as the most improved road in the country in terms of road safety and casualty reduction.
Prior to 2006 the collision record on the A4128 Hughenden Road was identified as a significant problem with 26 crashes in the 6.5 years to June 2006. A number of measures have been introduced to improve the safety of this road including improved delineation and intelligent road studs and during two survey periods – from 2004-06 and 2007-09 – the number of fatal and serious collisions dropped by 89%, from 19 to two.
The Prince Michael Commendation was for the ‘Be a Better Biker’ scheme which promotes the benefits of post-test training and offers courses to ensure that a biker’s riding capabilities best match those of their machine. Since the courses began in 2004 there has been a significant drop in biker crashes on the roads of Buckinghamshire.
The awards were presented at Hughenden Manor and an official ceremony took place at the Savoy Hotel in London.
