Upper Thames Street Tunnel

09/01/2012
Upper Thames Street Tunnel Ringway Jacobs have applied Ceramicoat to the walls of the eastbound and westbound bores in the Upper Thames Street Tunnel to improve safety through an increase in visibility.

The painting provides TfL with numerous benefits. It makes the tunnel lighter by better reflecting the new LED lighting, further reducing energy consumption whilst also providing a more pleasant streetscape environment for the road user.

The work was carried out at night by Industrial Marine Coating Ltd who also manufacture the coating. Traffic management was shared with ongoing works at Blackfriars Station so that disruption to the network was reduced.

The coating is in addition to LED lighting recently installed in the westbound bore of the tunnel. The new T-Line Luminaries from Indal WRTL combined with their B-Scout tunnel lighting control system will potentially save TfL around £40,000 annually through reduced maintenance requirements and a 60% reduction in energy consumption.

The combination of the two technologies will increase visibility and therefore safety in the tunnel, particularly for cyclists as the visual contrast between the tunnel wall and the cyclist increases.
