The role of a Road Safety Education Officer is to provide first class service to our customers in ensuring that parents and children have the knowledge and support to use the roads safely and therefore help achieve a reduction in the number of people killed or seriously injured on Essex roads. Reporting to the Lead Road Safety Officer, the successful candidate will provide behaviour change information, education and training to both adults and children within primary school and road side settings, usually needing to be on site at the start of the school day.
The Road Safety Education Officer will be a frontline employee and part of the public face of the Safer Essex Roads Partnership (SERP) and Essex Highways. They will be highly visible to residents, road users and other customers on a day to day basis.
The successful candidate will need to be enthusiastic, self-motivated and have excellent time management that will equip them to work equally well, whether independently, or as part of a team.
This role is term time only, 30 hours per week and can be based out of our Chelmsford or Colchester Offices/Depots.
A DBS check will be required for the successful applicant.
To deliver the Road Safety programme directly to children in Reception classes and Year 5 and to speak to parents and carers to inform, educate and change behaviour. Whilst education and training will be the key techniques with children, the interactions with adults may also involve the challenging of existing and ingrained behaviours in order to improve awareness and understanding and to encourage the setting of good examples for their children.
To manage own workload and book all appointments directly with schools to deliver approximately 250 training sessions per year
To display appropriate levels of conduct, professionalism and courtesy at all times
To collate information and provide reports and records of activity
To share a commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and vulnerable adults
To understand and promote the overall functions, aims and direction of SERP and Essex Highways
To carry out any other reasonable duties that may be directed or implied from time to time commensurate to the post and/or organisational requirements
The post is unlikely to demand any working of unsociable hours, weekends or public holidays but more general team objectives may provide some opportunities to do so if desired
Skills and Experience
Minimum of 4 GCSE or equivalent level, one of which will be English
An ability to communicate comfortably with both adults and children through excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Basic IT experience is beneficial for communication with the schools and colleagues
A current, valid driving licence is essential as it is essential to be mobile throughout the county
An understanding of Behaviour Change Techniques is desirable
Must be able to follow processes and procedures
A good understanding of Health and Safety
Ability to provide clear instructions
Ability to work safely and productively with minimum supervision
An understanding of the importance of handling data sensitively
