A noise-reduction project that used state-of-the art materials as well and innovation and the know-how of our industry partners earned no less than three national industry awards.

The challenge was to resurface a two-kilometre section of the Wendover bypass in Bucks which has become very congested – and noisy - because of the volume of HS2 construction traffic using it

We used highly durable ‘quiet asphalt, specially-designed by partners from Jean Lefebvre (JLUK) and laid by our shareholders Eurovia. The product not only reduced traffic noise by over five decibels, it also gives excellent ride quality.

We utilised high levels of digital technology on the project including intelligent rollers and self-levelling paver technology to ensure a smoother surface. Integrated GPS systems ensured no part of the road was left unrolled maximising the pavement life. These innovative practices yielded a significant carbon reduction of 95,000kg of CO2 as well as reduced carbon on materials. This technology also enabled the production of a full digital record of all activity undertaken. These innovations combined to help ensure the project also came in under budget.

After being named Innovation of the Year, as well as overall winner, at the annual Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation Awards, the Wendover ‘Quiet Asphalt’ scheme also won Building/Infrastructure Project of the Year at the Edie Sustainability Leaders Awards.

A great example of our values: collaboration, excellence and integrity.
