This October has marked the end of the two year apprenticeship for the first apprentices to join Cheshire East Highways. Congratulations to our three apprentices who have all taken up their new contracts with Ringway Jacobs as highway maintenance operatives.

During their time as apprentices the three have supplemented their college studies with on the job training and have been involved in most highway maintenance activities. This has included a wide variety from repairing carriageway and footway defects to wholesale footway reconstruction.

They have also worked on several drainage investigation and repair schemes, alongside routine gully emptying and jetting, investigating and excavating the problem area followed by repair and re-instatement of the ground works.

All three of them have worked and gained experience on bridges and have occasionally worked with the community gang covering a wide range of schemes such as sign maintenance, tree pruning, dry stone walling through to dealing with the numerous weather and storm events Cheshire has experienced.

During the period of their apprenticeship, they have continued to gain industry accreditation in numerous areas including Traffic Management S12D and CSCS.

In all the above works, our apprentices will have worked alongside experienced operatives, gaining a wide range of knowledge and experience in health and safety, the use of small plant and machinery and the administration side of an operative’s duties.

Now that they have become valued members of the Cheshire East Highways team, it proves that the two year apprenticeship has act as a springboard for the next stage in their careers with Ringway Jacobs.
