Essex road network praised with highest UK government rating

Essex has received top national recognition for its approach to maintaining and improving its road network

Essex has received top national recognition for its approach to maintaining and improving its road network, in a move welcomed by delivery partner Ringway Jacobs.

Essex County Council has been awarded a ‘green’ rating by the UK Government for road maintenance - the highest level available - highlighting the strength of its long-term investment strategy and proactive approach to highways management.

As the strategic delivery partner for Essex Highways, Ringway Jacobs has played a key role in supporting this achievement across more than 5,000 miles of roads throughout the county. The recognition reflects a wide range of essential works, including resurfacing, vegetation clearance, signage improvements, pothole repairs and winter services.

The rating also acknowledges the council’s continued investment beyond its annual highways budget, alongside targeted initiatives such as the Priority One Programme and the Members’ Highways Initiative. Delivered in partnership with Ringway Jacobs, these programmes have enabled proactive maintenance and focused repairs in response to concerns raised by local councillors and residents.

Together, these efforts have contributed to a safer, more efficient and resilient road network for communities, businesses and visitors across Essex.

Ringway Jacobs said it is proud to support the council in delivering high-quality infrastructure and praised the dedication of teams working both on the ground and behind the scenes to make the achievement possible.
