New technology to tackle fuel spills

Ringway Jacobs utilises new technology to clean up fuel spills on the road network.

After recently introducing our largest all-electric vehicle to its Essex Highways fleet, Ringway Jacobs is now using some innovative technology at the other end of the scale…

Ringway Jacobs is among the first tranche of highway services providers to deploy micro-organisms on the road network to clean up fuel spills.

Traditional methods of clearing fuel spills rely on sand and other absorbent materials which can require lengthy and inconvenient road closures as well as costly clean-ups. But after some incredibly successful trials, Ringway Jacobs is now using The Fuel Spill Digester - an eco-friendly alternative which uses natural bacteria and enzymes to quickly ‘eat’ fuel, oils and solvents spilled on roads.

As soon as the micro-organism is sprayed onto a spill, the enzymes break down the fuel’s harmful components while bacteria digest them. Dangerous and slippery fuel is transformed into water within minutes and lanes can be washed down and reopened to traffic quickly – often well within an hour for smaller spills.

Whether great or small, Ringway Jacobs is always looking at the latest technology to improve the services it provides.
